What To Expect Each Visit
From start to finish, each visit to our office builds upon the last. Your body has to go through a particular phase of care in order to repair itself correctly and completely. Chiropractic care is similar to building a house…you have to do things in a particular order for the foundation to stand strong, then you build upon that until it’s completed.
Therefore, our first consideration is to eliminate your pain by combining our available services, home care instruction guidelines, and teaching you proper stretches and exercises. Next, we want to correct and strengthen the damaged area and ultimately we want to promote wellness. For Dr. Ivey, there are three general phases of chiropractic care.
Phases of Care
Phase 1: Relief Care
Dr. Ivey’s main objective during the initial phase is to relieve your pain. The time required to first lessening the severity of your pain then the time it takes to eliminate the pain depends upon 5 key components:
- How long you have had the back pain, neck pain, headache, fibromyalgia, sciatica etc. Acute pain improves faster than chronic pain.
- The age of the patient; younger patients will generally heal faster, as we age our body responds slower.
- The type of work you do and the recreational activities you participate in and their effect on painful areas.
- How well you follow the work and homecare instructions given to you by Dr. Ivey.
- How well Dr Ivey and staff advise you and do their part in helping relieve your pain and restore you to optimum health.
Phase 2: Correction and Strengthening Phase
Once the pain has been lessened, Dr. Ivey will continue to work to restore the malpositioned vertebrae (spinal bones) to reach maximum improvement. The target here is to continue to facilitate proper spinal alignment thereby increasing your mobility, decreasing the muscle spasms, begin to strengthen the damaged and weakened muscles, and reducing or eliminating your pain all together. Mild flare-ups may occur during this phase because your body has not fully healed. Obviously the pain will lessen and will become more like soreness, but this additional care is still necessary to reach maximum health. The weakened and painful body parts be it the neck, back, low back, shoulders, extremities etc will be first stabilized and strengthened through a specialized exercise program designed to restore optimal health. Typically during the corrective phase of treatment, more and more different exercises will be given to increase muscle strength and stabilize the involved area as you return to all of your work and recreational activities. Dr. Ivey will re-train the muscles in the involved area to consistently function properly. The patients who complete their care always have better long term results than those who receive pain relief care only. After this phase is complete, the chance of the condition returning is greatly reduced, but will require follow up check-ups to maintain optimal health.
Phase 3: Wellness Phase
After the first two phases have been completed, you will need to have personal required checkups with Dr. Ivey to ensure the advantages of better health, full mobility, no pain, more energy, and less medical costs. Just as cars need tune-ups to work efficiently when you want them to, no matter if they are new or used, the body also needs tune ups to function properly. Early treatment of your pain and injuries will help you avoid debilitating pain, lost work days, restricted motion, and other life restrictions. One of the main reasons health care costs are so high today is because people wait until they have a serious problem before they go see the doctor. Too many people focus on symptoms when symptoms are usually the last thing to show up and the first thing to go away. Just because the symptoms are gone or somewhat relieved does not mean the problem is corrected. Dr. Ivey and the Staff at Advantage Healthcare encourage you to make Chiropractic care a part of your lifestyle. You’ll be amazed at the results! Allow us to change your life by restoring your health.
